Three decades of doing it right.
What started in 1995 as 3,000 square feet and a simple dream has become 14,000 square feet, 29,000 consignors, and a different store every single day.
Debbie Shough, Owner
Debbie's not-so-secret formula.
Debbie Shough opened etc. in 1995 with 3,000 square feet, a clear vision, and an instinct for finding pieces worth keeping. Three expansions later, that instinct still drives every decision on the floor.
"On our first anniversary, a neighbor's tree fell into our living room before work. I dusted myself off and got to the store. That's pretty much how the whole 30 years has gone."
Debbie and her husband Steve have a full house. Their son Josh — in kindergarten when the store opened — is grown now, married to Morgan, with two granddaughters of their own. Debbie and Steve also have two children adopted from Uganda. That spirit of giving runs through the family and the store, which gives back to a number of local missions, turning its success into something bigger than retail.
Between running a 14,000 square foot business full-time, raising a family, and supporting the causes she cares about, Debbie's plate stays full. But as she'll tell you herself, she's quick to count the blessing of loving what she does — and the team she gets to do it with.
The 3-KCs.
Kind: a group united by common traits or interests. We turn the noun into a verb — Kindness to Customers, Co-Workers, and Community.
Kind to customers
- A clean, organized environment to consign and shop
- Fairness in every transaction, with consignors and customers alike
Kind to co-workers
- Supporting each other and uplifting one another in every aspect of the work
- Operating as a team — every day, every shift, every floor
Kind to the community
- Giving back locally through donations of goods and services
- Supporting a number of local missions close to home
The story so far.
1995
The beginning
Debbie Shough opens etc. Consignment Shoppe in a 3,000 square foot space with a simple dream: a welcoming, clean place where customers love to shop. The early days run on two employees and a lot of family volunteers.
1996
First anniversary
A tree falls into the Shough family's living room on Friday the 13th — the morning of the store's first anniversary. Debbie dusts off and gets to work. By now the team has grown to five employees.
Expansion years
Three expansions
Demand keeps growing. The shop expands three separate times, eventually reaching 14,000 square feet of retail space dedicated to consigned apparel, accessories, and home goods.
2017–2021
Reader's Choice years
etc. is voted Winston-Salem's Reader's Choice for consignment year after year — a recognition that comes directly from the community we built the store to serve. As the store grows, so does the team, with new faces added to keep up with demand.
Today
34 employees strong
Three decades, millions of consignments, and an always-changing selection later, etc. is home to 29,000 consignors, a team of 34 employees, and a different store every day.
Our small, happy village.
Behind every find, every fair price, and every consignment is a team that's been doing this together for years. They know the brands. They know the regulars. They know what's worth pulling and what isn't.
If you've shopped or consigned with us, chances are one of them helped you. If you haven't yet — come meet them.
